von Isobel McArthur / Jane Austen

Stolz und Vorurteil* (*oder so)

Jane Austen’s best-known novel, Pride and Prejudice, was pub- lished in 1813. Isobel McArthur’s acclaimed new version of Jane Austen’s masterpiece gives a voice to those who usually go unmentioned in a highly modern way that is surprisingly faithful to the original work. In a true tour de force, five maids impersonate not only Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy but nearly the entire characters of the novel. In the meantime, a narrative of feminine self-determination and economic dependence emerges that does not seem so remote.
