Marburger Erklärung der Vielen

On May 8 and 9, 2020, numerous Marburg arts and cultural institutions published a joint "Erklärung der Vielen".

The Marburg Declaration was drawn up over several months on the initiative of Katrin Hylla from TNT by employees of the Theater neben dem Turm, the Hessisches Landestheater and the KFZ and signed by large sections of the Marburg cultural scene. It is based on the Berlin Declaration of the Many, which was drawn up in 2018 and disseminated and adopted nationwide.

The Marburg Declaration of the Many advocates a free, democratic society in which the freedom of art, science and culture are indispensable. Art, science and culture in particular take a critical look at social conditions and call for dialog and debate. This can initiate processes of change and advance social and political discourse.

By signing the declaration, cultural professionals are sending out a signal: Against right-wing positions that spread hatred and agitation, that attack people because of their origin, sexual orientation or beliefs. Against right-wing populist positions that want to intervene in performance schedules, polemicize against the freedom of art and work towards the renationalization of culture. They are sending out a signal: Art remains free!

The signatories commit themselves to solidarity with those affected by right-wing agitation - whether groups, individuals or institutions - and to open dialog about right-wing strategies.

The first signatories include Theater neben dem Turm, Hessisches Landestheater Marburg, KFZ Marburg, Waggonhalle Kulturzentrum, Marburger Schlosskonzerte, Jazzinitiative Marburg, ACTeasy, Die Hörtheatrale, Kulturhorizonte, Theater GegenStand and others.

The declaration is published on www.dievielen.de and can be supported there by private individuals, initiatives and creative artists.

The "brilliant stream" of the days of action on May 8 and 9 can also be found there, as the current situation is causing demos and actions to shift to the Internet. The Marburgers are also participating with a video of the declaration and are calling for a "photo demo": instead of gathering, individuals are taking photos with posters and gold flags (the symbol of the many) and sharing them on social networks.
